What are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are used to repair teeth which have a cavity, from decay or injury. We remove the decayed part, clean the cavity thoroughly, and carefully fill the space with a resin. This restores the tooth's shape, function, and prevents further damage. We are an amalgam-free practice, and only use modern resins, which are colour-matched to your teeth. Resin is durable and can be shaped, polished, and shaded to resemble your natural teeth.

Getting Fillings: A 4 Step Process

Our dentists will usually perform the following steps:

  1. The first step is to compare the composite resin colour with your tooth colour, using a shade guide to make sure they pick the closest colour match.

  2. We then clean and shape the tooth and remove any decay and undermined tooth structure. A conditioning liquid and adhesive solution is then applied to the tooth to help the bonding substance adhere.

  3. The next step is to apply the selected resin to the tooth, smooth it and shape it to perfect the tooth shape. It is then hardened with a blue light.

  4. When the bonding material hardens, the dentists can trim and shape the tooth further if need be. They then polish the tooth so that it matches with the rest of the tooth. In most cases, this whole process should take roughly 30-45 minutes for a single tooth.

FAQ: Fillings

  • Composite fillings are made from resin (Bis-GMA) with other filler materials such as inorganic fillers. They are tooth-coloured and bond directly to the tooth. Amalgam fillings are silver-coloured and made from a variety of metals and alloys, including mercury - and tend to stand out, so don’t have the same aesthetic as resin.

  • The lifespan of a filling depends on factors such as the type of material used, your oral hygiene habits, grinding and your diet. With proper care, fillings can last for many years.

  • We use a local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth, ensuring you experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. We always prioritise your well-being and offer a calm environment throughout your appointment.

  • Let us know in advance if you experience dental anxiety. We offer various options to help you feel relaxed and comfortable during your visit.
